5 reasons why India lags in tourism

Recently, I chose to travel twice by public transport. Once from Delhi to Bhopal by Rajdhani and second time from Delhi to Mcleodganj by Volvo from the notorious ISBT.

When I reached Nizamuddin for my train to Bhopal, I felt I was part of a herd. No sitting space, dirty station, people have no choice but to stand or sit on filth.

The other experience was no better. The enquiry counter had one old stooge who wore the expression of being Mr knowall but in reality was an idiot who had no clue. The whole place is chaotic and everyone tries to fleece some money out of you as if you are some sacrificial lamb waiting to be slaughtered. The food is sub standard and expensive and served with an attitude that you are being obliged. The bus service was no better. Till the last ten minutes I was kept waiting for your bus number. If you miss it it's your problem.

How can we make things better so that tourists really feel incredible travelling in India?

Here are the 5 things we must do immediately

1. Be stern with the existing staff if they don't change just throw them out

2. Tell people that they have their jobs because of the travellers so they need to be grateful to the travellers and serve with courtesy.

3. Cleanliness and methodical processes don't cost money. One needs to change the way one thinks. It is not okay to be selling and sitting in a shithole and sell delicious items. The ambience needs to be conducive to the feel good experience

4. Irritated and frustrated customers will not help you in your business. Think long term and serve people rather than trying to act oversmart.

5. The audit has to happen regularly, sincerely and action taken severely. Only then the Stooges will learn not to be Stooges and influence the other Stooges to serve.

I hope someone from the ministry of tourism is reading it else all the Incredible India campaigns are just money down the drain.

Broken

I feel like the kite that was flying high in the sky And suddenly the thread broke somewhere somehow And the drifting and dancing with the cool breeze started And then slowly the gravity took over dragging down and down and down The children of the area were too busy to run after me Probably attending some class for their future The onlookers didn't give me a second look Now I'm stuck on a branch of tree High up from the battles but not high enough for the breeze to push me again and again I am tied to the tree It talks to me about being grounded About the greatness in being rooted I don't understand it Because I have only flown all my life Never been tied to a tree I have only longed for the blue sky all my life Have only heard cheering when I flew high Now the rain gets me wet and soggy And the sun makes me brittle I wish the tree knew the joy of flying Wish I could convince it the beauty seen from high up in the sky The feeling of racing the birds hi...

Can the exhibition industry go virtual?

Exhibitions and stalls are an integral part of direct marketing in almost every industry. But can these exhibitions go virtual? The stalls could be virtually created and virtual meetings fixed from the comfort of one's own location. Imagine the amount of time that can be saved in travelling, planning logistics, managing hotel reservations etc. And ofcourse the cost. Imagine if virtual reality was able to give you the same feel as you get when you are inside an exhibition! You look around and be part of the traffic just as you are in real world.... Imagine animation, 3D and other graphics can add life to your stall. Just like an animation film, if  you are able to create a virtual reality.... If today you are able to attend eight meetings a day, may be you could attend twelve then as you will save the time of commuting physically from one room to another. Can it happen in the near future? I feel it can! Would love to know your views. ---------------- The views expressed are m...

The power of hope

In my view, the gift of hope is the greatest gift mankind has with it. Every achievement no matter how small starts with this ability of ours - hope. And from hope arises the second gift we have - trust It's a combination of hope and trust that actually runs this world. When we get into a plane and are flying in the air with no safety net whatsoever, hope that we will be safe and the trust that a few of our species namely the engineers and pilots and even the person filling the fuel in the aircraft have done their best. We trust their ability to take care of us. The pilots do the same with pharmacists who design pills that we eat without thinking if we will be alive. Because we hope that we will get well and we trust our fellow humans. Name a profession, and we are bound by an unseen contract of hope and trust with humanity. The army, the farmers, the barbers, the bakers, the teachers, the nurses....the list is endless but yet the hope and trust is what we really buy in return for ...
